美國的大學需要經由"批准"和"認證"兩個階段，才能成為一所教學質量得到社會承認的大學。
"批准"階段一般由政府部門執行，而"認證"則是由美國教育部授權的行業性民間組織完成，"認證"的實質是在政府監督下的同行評議。

　　美國有兩個層次的認證機構。首先是6大地區性認證機構，負責對大學的綜合實力進行認證。獲得這6大機構的認證，即表明學校的綜合實力得到社會承認。這其中有一個例外，就是經紐約州教育董事會認證的大學，也是正規大學。學校內具體專業的學術水平，還需要獲得專業認證機構的認證，全美共有47個專業認證機構。

六個區域認證機構
美國有六個區域認證機構，它們主要功能在評估教育單位，包括公立和私立大學和學院及其他相關學校. 這六個機構是:

• Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools
• New England Association of Schools and Colleges
• North Central Association of Colleges and Schools
• Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges
• Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
• Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

每一認證機構負責該區各州審核工作。

Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools
負責地區包括﹕德拉瓦州、哥倫比亞特區、馬里蘭州、新澤西州、紐約州、賓州、美屬波多黎各及維京群島 

New England Association of Schools and Colleges
該區機構負責審核高等教育及職業訓練單位，地區包括康乃狄克州、緬因州、麻薩諸塞州、新罕布夏州、羅德島和佛蒙特州。 

North Central Association of Colleges and Schools
負責地區包括﹕亞利桑那州、阿肯色州、科羅拉多州、伊利諾州、印地安那州、愛阿華州、堪薩斯州、密西根州、明尼蘇達州、密蘇里州、內布拉斯加州、新墨西哥州、北達科達州、俄亥俄州、奧克拉荷馬州、南達科達州、西維吉尼亞州、威斯康辛州和懷俄明州。 

Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges
負責地區包括﹕阿拉巴馬州、佛羅里達州、喬治亞州、肯塔基州、路易斯安那州、密西西比州、北卡羅萊納州、南卡羅萊納州、田納西州、德州和維吉尼亞州。 

Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
負責地區包括﹕阿拉斯加州、愛達荷州、蒙大拿州、內華達州、俄勒岡州、猶他州和華盛頓州。

Western Association of Schools and Colleges
負責地區包括加州、夏威夷州和美屬薩摩群島、馬里亞納群島、關島。

教育單位認證機構： 

• Accrediting Council for Continuing Education & Training (ACCET);
• Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS); Distance Education and Training Council

教育單位認證與計畫認證
　　除上述六個區域認證機構和教育單位認證機構外，還有一些專業認證機構負責審核學術課程；某些教育單位獲得認證，但不保證該單位所有課程都會獲得認證。當你找學校時，最重要的就是學校和課程都要經過認證才行。下面這些機構可以幫你查明認證情況：

　　在美國加利福尼亞州，成立一所新的大學必須首先到"加州消費者事務部"下屬的"私立中等後教育和職業教育局"註冊，獲得批准後才可以開始正式運作。批准許可證一般有效期為5年，5年後必須申請新的許可證。加州中等後教育委員會指出，"獲得加利福尼亞州批准，表明這所學校符合加州有關部門規定的真實、財務穩定和教育質量的最低標準"。得到批准，大學才可以開始招生，並授予政府審核批准可以頒發的學位。學校同時可以申請美國的一些專門機構的"認證"。獲得更多的社會認證。未被政府教育部門正式批准的大學，招收的學生不能獲得正式的美國學位。

　　申請認證，需要經過這些機構的嚴格的考核。認證的第一步是獲得為期兩年的"基本資格"，這表明大學有獲得最終認證的潛力。如果通過評估，就可以獲得為期4年的"預備資格"。下一步是得到"初步認證"，初步認證期為5年。這個階段通過後，才最終得到"認證"，而且6大認證機構每7到10年，會對被認證的大學進行重新評估。

　　若想在美國獲得正規大學碩士以上學位，通常須要參加GRE或GMAT等考試。美國的大學可以選
擇在其它國家建立分校、合作課程，頒發美國學位。有美國的一些正規大學已經開始和在海外開展教育合作。

　　在亞洲，也有美國的大學與中國的一些大學合作，合作辦學，並授予美方學位。按照美國的學籍規定，在美國正規大學獲得學位，須在美國學習9到10個月以上。目前美國正規大學在中國的專案多是以語言培訓等短期專案為主。另外，海外的一些政府機構與企業，與美國正規大學建立了為期一年或數月的短期管理人員培訓專案，這些合作教育項目總體水平較高，十分有效地提高了政府官員及企業管理人員素質。
